Shopify SEO migration: redirects, canonicals and sitemaps

The three mechanisms that decide whether Google treats your Shopify launch as the same site or a new one.

August 27, 2026 · ElvoApps

Search engines do not care that you “moved to Shopify.” They care whether a known URL still answers the same intent. That is the whole SEO migration job.

URL mapping

Every important old path needs a single Shopify destination: product, collection, page or article. Do not point ten category filters at the homepage. Do not let two old URLs canonical to different products that are actually the same SKU.

301 redirects

Shopify URL redirects are finite and should be treated as a dataset. Query strings, trailing slashes and http/https duplicates belong in the table. After launch, sample the money pages with a crawl, not with one teammate clicking around.

Canonicals

Shopify will emit canonical tags. Your job is to make sure they match the URLs you want in the index. Parameterized collection filters are the usual fight. If an SEO app and the theme both print canonicals, pick one owner.

Sitemaps and indexation

Submit the Shopify sitemap in Search Console. Remove the old property’s sitemap or the old domain’s DNS when the cutover is real. Then watch “Not found (404)” and “Page with redirect” for the URLs that used to rank.

This article sits in the migration cluster next to the WooCommerce walkthrough. Technical SEO beyond a move is covered on Shopify SEO.
